Main Street Spotlight:  Rep. Shelley Moore Capito and Rep. Pat Tiberi

This year the Main Street Partnership honored Representatives Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Pat Tiberi (R-OH) at their National Dinner with the Amory Houghton Award for Public Service.

The award is named for Amo Houghton, the founder and Chairman of the Board of the Republican Main Street Partnership.  Houghton served for 18 years in the House representing New York’s 29th Congressional District and is also the former Chairman of the Board of Corning.  Previous recipients of Main Street’s Public Service Award include Senators Norm Coleman (R-MN), Susan Collins (R-ME), Pat Roberts (R-KS), John McCain (R-AZ), former Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman, Secretary of Transportation and former Rep. Ray LaHood (R-IL), Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), as well as former Main Street President Tom Davis.

Shelley Moore Capito

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito represents West Virginia’s Second Congressional District. Capito, a former member of the West Virginia House of Delegates, currently serves on the House Financial Services Committee as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit.  She also sits on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

With her record of bipartisan cooperation, she strongly believes that the challenges of our day demand bipartisan solutions. With that spirit in mind, she has been an advocate for a range of policies that directly impact her constituents, including energy independence, quality healthcare and the safety and security of our service men and women.

Capito lives in Charleston with her husband Charles L. Capito. They have three children: sons Charles (and his wife Laura) and Moore, and one daughter, Shelley.  The family recently grew with the birth of Capito’s first grandchild, Celia Vivienne Capito, who was born to Charles and Laura on April 15, 2010.

Capito graduated from Duke University with a B.S. in Zoology and she holds a M.Ed. from the University of Virginia.

Pat Tiberi

Pat Tiberi is a member of the House Ways and Means Committee that has jurisdiction over tax issues, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and trade agreements.  He currently is the Chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures.  As a former Chairman of the Select Education Subcommittee, Congressman Tiberi wrote and passed the Older Americans Act, a law that reauthorized and improved numerous programs that help Older Americans.  The AARP, Meals on Wheels, and the Alzheimer’s Association of Central Ohio have recognized Congressman Tiberi for the lead he took in the bipartisan effort to pass this law.

Son of Italian immigrants, Congressman Tiberi has been a lifelong resident of the 12t hCongressional District.  He is a 1985 graduate of The Ohio State University and was a member of The Ohio State University Marching Band.  Congressman Tiberi began his career in public service as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives.  Prior to being elected to Congress, he worked as a realtor.  Congressman Tiberi and his wife, Denice, are the proud parents of their daughters, Angelina, Cristina, Daniela, and Gabriela.
